For fifteen years the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have endured a war linked to regional politics, interethnic tensions, long-standing governance problems and the battle for the country’s rich natural resources – coltan, gold, oil and gas. In eastern DRC, the full-scale war that resumed at the end of August 2008 killed thousands of people and forced tens of thousands more to flee.

In the Gaza Strip in the Palestinian Territories, 2008 was marked by a dramatic deterioration of the economic, security and health situations. The Israeli military incursion and inter-Palestinian conflict continued, reaching a peak of violence at the end of the year and leaving many people wounded.
